The most common types of bankruptcy are Chapter 7, sometimes referred to as a liquidating bankruptcy and Chapter 13, sometimes referred to as debt consolidation. Another type of bankruptcy is Chapter 11, which is sometimes referred to as reorganization bankruptcy.

In all types of bankruptcy, the person or entity filing bankruptcy is required to list all of their assets and creditors. Individuals are allowed to claim certain of their assets exempt to be allowed to keep them for a fresh start after completing their bankruptcy. At the end of the bankruptcy, an individual receives a discharge, which means that all of their dischargeable debts are no longer owed. Some debts, such as child support, alimony and certain taxes are non-dischargeable and will still be owed after the individual receives their discharge.
